What can you put in a skip bin

At Hippo Skip Bin Hire, we aim to make the whole experience straightforward and easy for our customers, and our waste identification process is a big part of that. We have six different waste types to ensure that all waste is disposed of correctly. Get the right type of bin for the waste you want to dispose of.

We recommend you follow our guide when using a skip bin service to avoid any issues or additional charges from our waste facilities. Our skip bin suppliers are very strict regarding what kinds of waste can be placed in their bins, so it is important that you know what you can and cannot put in a skip bin. By following our guide, you can be sure that you are disposing of your waste in the correct way.

General Waste

Weight limits apply per 150kg cubic metres.

Please find below the specifications for what can be placed in the general waste bin:

  • Household waste such as clothes, paper, cardboard, bedding, towels, kitchenware, bathroom accessories, duvets, and cushions
  • Light commercial waste such as office furniture, desks, desk tidies, chairs, and stationery
  • Furniture and appliances like cupboards, loungers, washing machines, cots, beds, fridges, chairs, and sofas
  • Light green waste like shrubs, grass, foliage, leaves, and twigs
  • Light building construction waste like wood, flooring, and wallpaper

Do note that carpets and TV screens cannot be disposed of in this.

The following waste should not be placed in the general rubbish bin:

  • Hard, heavy materials: Bricks, sand, concrete, tiles, clay, stones
  • Soil or soil with turf attached – a soil-dirt bin is required for this waste
  • Palm tree trunks, tree trunks, roots or turf – a soil dirt bin is required for this waste
  • Synthetic grass
  • Hazardous materials that must not be placed in this bin include Asbestos, insulation, food, wet paint, empty chemical containers, liquids or putrescible.

Green Waste

What can you place in the general waste bin?

  • Household waste: Clothes, paper, cardboard, bedding, towels, kitchenware, bathroom accessories, duvets, cushions
  • Light commercial waste: Office furniture such as desks, desk tidies, chairs, stationary,
  • Furniture and Appliances: Cupboards, loungers, washing machines, cots, beds, fridges, chairs, sofas
  • Light green waste: Shrubs, grass, foliage, leaves, twigs
  • Light building construction waste: Wood, flooring, wallpaper

Do note that carpets and TV screens cannot be disposed of in this.

Concrete/Brick

What can you place in the concrete/brick bin?

  • Bricks and/or bricks and mortar
  • Concrete – any concrete must be no bigger than 600×600
  • Roof tiles
  • Floor tiles
  • Pebbles
  • Rocks
  • Stones

The following must not be placed in the concrete/brick bin:

  • General, green or excavation waste
  • Soil or turf – all soil must go in a soil/dirt bin
  • Palm trees and fronds
  • Sand, soil and dirt are strictly prohibited and must be exposed in the soil/dirt bin
  • Hazardous materials that must not be placed in this bin include: Asbestos, insulation, food, wet paint, empty chemical containers, liquids or putrescible

 

Soil/Dirt

What can you place in the soil/dirt bin?

  • Soil/dirt rock, sandstone and clay that is naturally occurring
  • Turf and vegetation that takes up less than 10% of the space of the bin

DO NOT PLACE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN THE SOIL/DIRT BIN

  • Vegetation that takes up more than 10% of the bin
  • Any general waste – please get a general waste bin for this
  • Contaminated soil
  • Manmade materials
  • Hazardous materials that must not be placed in this bin include: Asbestos, insulation, food, wet paint, empty chemical containers, liquids or putrescibles

Mixed Waste

What can you place in the mixed waste bin?

Waste from domestic, commercial demolition, construction or renovation

  • Hardfill waste: Bricks, concrete, tiles – all pieces no larger than 600×600
  • Treated timber: Retaining walls, decking, floorboards, fences, sheds
  • Household waste: Clothes, paper, cardboard, bedding, towels, kitchenware, bathroom accessories, duvets, cushions
  • Furniture and Appliances: Cupboards, loungers, washing machines, cots, beds, fridges, chairs, sofas
  • Green waste: Shrubs, foliage, grass clippings, leaves, twigs, bushes, palm trees
  • Tree trunks: Trunks cannot exceed 300mm in diameter or 300mm in length.
